New York Best Interest: Best Interest Training By Carrier for Life Insurance Updated: September 20, 2024

New York Regulation 187 (Reg 187), Suitability and Best Interest in Life Insurance and Annuity Transactions, went into effect on February 1, 2020 for life insurance recommendations. Prior to submitting any application for a policy issued in New York after the effective date, producers must complete all carrier-required training.

We are still receiving additional information from our carriers and will continue to update this chart as we learn more.

Please note: not all carriers and products are available for all accounts. Consult with your Crump representative for more information.

American National     check check  LIMRA and RegEd are the preferred vendors. WebCE, QuestCE, and Kaplan are also approved but will require proof of completion. See their microsite for more information.
Ameritas           The suitability requirement for NY Reg 187 may also be met through other training providers by sending the certificate of completion to new business for verification that the training requirement has been met.
Brighthouse Financial   Brighthouse offers a written training document which includes considerations for both annuity and life insurance sales. Brighthouse does not request proof that a third party training was completed.
Equitable

Equitable will accept all NYDFS approved vendors as well as LIMRA. Training documentation should be emailed to Equitable Life Licensing Team at LifeLicensing@equitable.com.

Foresters   check

In addition to the vendors checked to the left, Foresters will also accept BI courses from A.D. Banker & Company, WebCE, and ClienTell CE.

You may also contact their Contracting area at 1-866-466-7166 Option 4, to validate other courses.

Gerber Life Gerber will accept all NYDFS approved vendors. Please send your training certification to Gerber Life at (fax) 877-608-4634 or glic.appointment.status@gerberlife.com.
Guardian      

You must complete a mandatory Regulation 187 training with any NYDFS approved training firm and notify Guardian of the training completion status. Guardian suggests either RegEd, Kaplan or LIMRA. See Guardian's guide for more information.

Once all relevant New York Regulation 187 training is completed, email ACL@glic.com with a copy of your completion certificate along with the advisor's name, NPN, the CE vendor, course title, and date of completion.
John Hancock       Details on accessing the training are available in here. John Hancock will receive evidence of completion directly from the vendors.
Lincoln Financial Group   See Lincoln's guide to accessing their courses.
MassMutual    

RegEd is their preferred vendor.

If completing through LIMRA: before you can complete this training with LIMRA, email AdvisorOperationsHub@massmutual.com in order to be added so they receive notice of the completion.
MetLife             Product shelf limited to whole life conversions. Contact carrier for details.
National Life Group           RegEd is their vendor of choice.
Nationwide      

Nationwide will accept, and track completion of NY 187 training courses created by RegEd and Kaplan on their platforms.

New York Life        

New York Life has partnered with LIMRA for both Best Interest and Product Specific training. See their instructions for how to access the training.

NYL will also accept RegEd for Best Interest Training (not product training).
Principal       RegEd preferred and automated. For LIMRA or Kaplan, producers need to provide certificate with application submission.
Protective       Protective will accept all NYDFS approved vendors.
Prudential  

Prudential will accept Regulation 187 CE and Non-CE courses from vendors such as Kaplan, RegEd, and other NYDFS approved providers. Please see the list of approved DTCC vendors and course numbers below. FPs should choose the course most appropriate for their practice.

  • Kaplan: Approved Course numbers – 545469, 528711, 562628, 555115
  • RegEd: Approved Course numbers – 484_NY, 485_NY

Prudential will also accept the LIMRA/LOMA Regulation 187 training; however, these course completions do not go through DTCC and Prudential must obtain proof of training from LIMRA. Please contact Prudential if choosing LIMRA to satisfy the training requirement.

Security Mutual Life of New York Security Mutual will accept all NYDFS approved vendors.
Symetra         Symetra's required training is available via their website. See their instructions for more information. Their First Symetra Term Life product training includes the necessary pieces of information to meet the NY Reg. 187 training requirements and the product training requirements for Symetra, as determined by their compliance department. It does not provide any CE credit.
Transamerica Transamerica does not require a specific course variation or vendor be used; however, their preferred vendor is RegEd. If you use a vendor other than RegEd, you must submit the course completion certificate.
US Life (AIG/American General)     If you previously completed Best Interest Rules Training with one of their approved vendors, they will work with the vendor to obtain proof of training completion but in some cases they may require a copy of your training certificate.
William Penn (Legal & General)   check

Legal & General is providing training through LIMRA. Click the Compliance Training button at the top right of the screen.

Legal & General will also accept proof of completion for the best interest requirement from the vendors below. Please email a copy of the certificate of completion to wp_agent_licensing@lgamerica.com.
